This work speaks to history and how home is an archive that reflects cultural identity. These are moments of retracing oneself and looking at how my family archive is a way I know myself. This archive started at home, where I would search for what and who these family members are. The images provide ghostly marks that insist on the presence of what was or still is.
Fresco Gallery presents “Repatriation" an intimate showing of new monotypes by South African gallery artist Falida Nkomo.
Nkomo’s “Repatriation” holds a tender place to retrace the body back home; as a second-generation immigrant, the themes of belonging and identity continue to take centre stage in her practice.
Repatriation explores the concept of the home as an archive for memories of what has left and what still is.
The exhibition presents seven monoprints that marry photography and art as tools for returning to, restoring, remembering and retracing.
The colour scheme used in these works evokes a sense of nostalgia that reflects on the passage of time. Through these works, Nkomo invites us to share in these intimate moments of her familial history, steering conversations on how our history informs our present and, in turn, our individual identities.
This viewing offers a glimpse into Falida’s evolving practice and will consist of new pieces that frame her work in fresh perspectives.
