“Anchors” is an exploration of the multifaceted concept of identity — as a conduit for self-healing, a commemoration of the journey of returning to one’s self, and a grounding force in which authentic artistic expressions are born and thrive
Fresco Gallery presents “Anchors”, a group exhibition of monoprints and limited edition works by Chigozie Obi, Daëna Ladéesse, Mobolaji Ogunrosoye, Myles Igwebuike, and Falida Nkomo (August 10 - September 15, 2024).
“Anchors” is an exploration of the multifaceted concept of identity — as a conduit for self-healing, a commemoration of the journey of returning to one’s self, and a grounding force in which authentic artistic expressions are born and thrive.
Utilizing and experimenting with various printmaking techniques, each artist presents a showcase of meaningful expressions, offering a unique and personal perspective on the ways identity influences their practice and serves as a source of support, stability, and security, serving as their personal anchors amidst life's turbulence.
Falida Nkomo honors her mother’s memory and her identity within it, Daëna LaDeese’s pieces serve as a powerful interrogation of her cultural and spiritual identity, Myles Igwebuike is committed to telling transformative stories of African culture through multiple mediums, Chigozie Obi’s works provide social commentary, capturing experiences of the artist and the society around her, and Mobolaji Ogunrosoye explores ideas around distortion and perception using found and captured images of (West) African women on the continent and the diaspora.
This exhibition not only presents compelling visual narratives but also engages the senses on a deeper level. Sheila Chukwulozie’s original soundscape, "Ikuku Ku’m" (Wind, lift me), beckons visitors to listen, trust, and open themselves to the unknown. Complementing this, Myles Igwebuike’s draped fabric installation, "Ndi Nwanyi", invites you to pause, feel, and immerse yourself in the present moment.
